Each year Unesco awards a major city the title of World Book Capital. Ljubljana was chosen from among seven candidates, and will now be the tenth city to carry the title of World Book Capital, between 23 April 2010 and 23 April 2011. It means that Slovenia and its capital will be able to raise their worldwide profiles as a country and city with a rich literary history, and as places of contemporary literary and cultural creativity. Ljubljana’s programme consists of a host of original ideas to promote access to books, and to encourage literature, authors, book and reading. The basis of the programme is the involvement and connection of all links in the literary chain, from author to reader.
Alongside the National and University Library, the Botanic garden on Ljubljana are Slovenia’s oldest continuously operating cultural, scientific and educational institution. They were opened in 1810 as the Garden of Native Flora, at the Ecole Centrale. They were designed by Franc Hladnik (1773-1844), who was also the first director. Today the Botanic Garden cover two hectares, with more than 4.500 species, sub-species and varieties, of which more than a third are from Slovenia, while others are from various parts pf Europe. The gardens are also home to endangered plants, and even species that have vanished from the natural environment in Slovenia. In addition to the aforementioned endemic species, there are rare marsh species that once grew on the Ljubljana Marshes.
